June's Wellness Tip: Water Safety
The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in, on and around the water is to know your limits and learn how to swim. Here are some helpful tips for you and your family while swimming:
· Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone.
· Read and obey all rules and posted signs.
· Swim in areas that are supervised by a lifeguard.
· Children or inexperienced swimmers should take extra precaution, such as wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when around the water.
· Parents should set water safety rules for their family based on swimming abilities (for example, inexperienced swimmers should stay in water less than chest deep.)
· Children should also ask permission from parents first before they swim.
· Be knowledgeable of the water environment you are in and its potential hazards, such as deep and shallow areas, currents, depth changes, obstructions and where the entry and exit points are located. The more informed you are the more aware you will be of safety hazards and safe practices.
· Know how to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies.
· Use a feet-first entry when entering the water. Enter head-first only when the area is clearly marked for diving and has no obstructions.

Message from the Executive Director
Tom Campbell
Summer is finally here, and we are excited about our upcoming summer programming. We can't wait to share our new programs with you. During the summer, vacations and outdoor activities compound your already hectic schedule which may prevent you from coming to the club as often as you would like. It is important to keep your exercise routine going regardless of how busy your schedule may become. Beginning this month, we have many new youth programs and camps to help our younger members stay active and have fun. From themed summer day camps to summer REACH sessions to our new Water Scout classes, we have something for every child in your life. Don't forget to check out the youth programs open house or our first 3-on-3 kids' basketball tournament. Summer is the time to try new things and learn new ways to reach your goals. We have added summer health education classes on a variety of topics for both adults and children, and we've given our Pilates reformer program a makeover. Never tried personal training? Now is your chance to take advantage of our summer first-timers' training deals. Keep your eyes open for the new summer program guide to get a full listing of our summer programs. Lastly we will be celebrating member appreciation days on June 17 and 18. Stop by the club so we can personally thank you for being a member of Westview Healthplex Sports Club and for the opportunity to serve you. These two days we also invite our members to bring in guests for free, so feel free to bring your friends and show them why we are the best fitness club in Indianapolis. See you at the club! Have a great month! Tom Campbell Executive Director

Don't Forget About Your Back!
It's time for planting, gardening and getting your lawn in tip top shape. While you are busy getting your outdoor summer projects completed, don't forget to use proper lifting techniques to keep your back healthy and injury free. Here are a few tips to remember:
- Plan Ahead. Be sure to test the object to determine if you need help and look around to make sure there is a clear path to move through.
- Feet should be shoulder width apart. Start with a strong and solid base keeping your feet flat.
- Keep the object close to your body. The closer you can pull the object in, the easier it will be to hold and move.
- Lift your legs, not your back. Lift with your legs, and keep your head focused forward. Try to avoid bending at your waist and lifting and twisting.
For more tips on lifting safely and keeping your back healthy this summer, join us on Monday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m. for a discussion on healthy backs. This is a free class for members ($5 for non-members) and will cover proper lifting techniques, a discussion on your core muscles and the importance of stretching. Register at the service desk.
